PROJECTS - Hollantlaan, Utrecht
Referenct project : Hollantlaan, Utrecht
Client: Tons Vastgoed
Date executed: juli-augustus 2006
Duration: 45 days

Description of the project:
On the furniture boulevard in Utrecht Tons Vastgoed BV is creating a new shopping centre that has cellars underneath it. Because of the high groundwater level and the restrictions imposed by the government regarding pumping, it was necessary to make a horizontal connection to the construction pit. The major advantages of water glass injection over underwater concrete were:
- not using underwater concrete limited the excavation depth, so grouted anchors were not required and adjoining sites could remain unaffected by the consequences of the construction activities.
- the water glass injection meant the excavation could be carried out in stages, thus reducing movement of soil to a minimum.
- dry excavation of the construction pit meant the nuisance to surrounding business was kept to a minimum. Using water glass injection considerably reduced the amount of soil to be removed as there was no excavation needed for underwater concrete.
- vertical tension elements could remain absent, because the injection layer was put at such a depth that there is a balance between the rising groundwater pressure and the downwards weight of the ground above.
The construction pit had an area of 3.200 m2. The difference in groundwater level created was about 4 metres. The total surplus water during the construction was only 4 m³ per hour!
