Sealing sand boilsA sand boil or spring is a point where groundwater emerges from the ground spontaneously as a result of increased water pressure in deeper soil strata. In the Netherlands sand boils often occur in areas where the ground level is below New Amsterdam Level. The main problem with these sand boils is not really the excess water. Because the lower situated areas are close to the sea, at a greater depth there is the salt in the groundwater. A sand boil enables this salty groundwater to flow to the surface and contaminate the soil, which is detrimental to agriculture. Sand boils can also occur when building underground constructions, where lowering the groundwater is part of the construction process. Use is often made of the natural watertight clay layer in the soil combined with pumping. If this clay layer has holes or pockets of sand in it the groundwater flows to the surface and causes a sand boil.
